The above acronym is used to describe a stack of software that is used to run some pretty huge websites. How much would you pay for a server operating system, world-class web server software, a database with all the bells and whistles expected of today's data-driven applications (including query caching and crash recovery for the geeks in the house), and a scriptable front-end system catered to being embedded in HTML to rapidly deploy and modify interfaces? I can't divulge specifics about contracts I may have been involved with at previous gigs but i can tell you that the above system can cost enough to make the barriers to entry for many businesses too high depending on expected volume. Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP (LAMP) provide a very real system for constructing highly sophisticated web-based applications. I'll let Giao and others give you the specifics, HP has validated the platform witha move like this one. Oh, and by the way, you're soaking in a LAMP stack right now. Cheers.
