Happy Halloween friends. I came to work as one of three Blue Men. More details on this later. For now I'm backed up on all sorts of works I couldn't do with makeup caked on my face.
We thank Quinn for this sobering news. One of luminary DJs of hip-hop was killed in a NYC shooting. Jam Master Jay is Dead.
Pants with a special cellphone pocket. I've seen Neil wearing them and I gotta say they look alright.
Well done top half/ bottom half of different faces thingy.
Chatting with a friend this morning about religion I recalled a trip I took in 1991 to Siberia. I visited a village where the inhabitants had been banished to hundreds of years before. We asked an elder why their ancenstors were originally shunned by the church. He told us it was because they performed the sign of the cross with two fingers instead of three. For this they were banished. It got me thinking about the differences in religion that have caused so much pain in the world. These differences have been man-made. Religion is, in essence, one.
Heard of Yao Ming? He's the Chines basketball star who's been picked up by the Houston Rockets and represents a huge commercial sports boon for China. My buddy JB has set up a web site devoted to the mania surrounded this dude, the aptly titled YaoMingMania. Without giving up too many secrets about JB's success I will only say that this site is wildly successful for an individual effort. It kinda reminds me of another friend, who shall remain nameless, running CrackSmoker.
Note to self: Check out the following restaurants soon.
Maybe this has already been through the blog filtration system but I cannot believe it (though it seems to be based on fact). CD players glued shut to stop piracy.
Microsoft bought my old company. Time to check in with folks still working there and find out if they're safe or looking for work now. For those interested, I dumped all my shares a few months ago for $1.85/share to make a down payment on our house. I could have made a bit more had I waited but I needed the money and wouldn't change a thing. Now I do wish I had sold more than I did years ago when I sold 10% of my shares at $23/share. But that's a different story (thanks to JB for the link).
This one's funny in an SNL cheerleader sort of way. Black People Love Us!
I used to go to New York a couple of times a year for the Internet World conference or for interviews and wish I'd had a real guide like this one.
My friend Saul's sister has co-produced a movie that's due out this weekend. Here's to plugging flicks for friends...Truth About Charlie, The (2002). One question, Saul I think my invite to the red carpet opening in Hollywood must have gotten lost in the mail, please send another. ;^)
I gotta tell you, I'm not a big fan of high fashion but when that high fashion starts tooking like a past I'd like to forget about? OK, these fashion guys have to be more sensitive than this...
I don't have any comments on this Harry Potter Broom that don't border on inappropriate.
I'm not just blowing smoke up your $@# with this one...Oxford lab's pot-like medication will target chemotherapy nausea.
So I've mentioned to many of you this "new business" that I've been working on for a while now. Well, we confirmed the rumors yesterday and today the news media is reporting on it. We've launched a DVD Rentals business similar to Netflix...only cheaper. The story of how we got here is fodder for a business case but suffice it to say it's been a bumpy road but the opportunity is great. I'll post more links to artcles as I come accross them.
Thanks to Tim for the link. NOMAD answers the question of "what's the non-Apple answer to the iPod? NOMAD Jukebox Zen.
I've got more friends out of work right now than I care to. This article gives an interesting perspective on the subject of Silicon Valley's sagging economy.
I should start tallying the number of times the word "offline" comes up in meetings. It does have utility for not sucking everyone in a meeting into the low-level details of a particular issue. However, recently I've noticed that even in meetings designed specifically to dive down into details, the idea of taking ideas offline is being used as a way to avoid cramming through difficult issues or as I like to refer to it, working.
Thanks to the link from BoingBoing (nice switch ad) comes SeatGURU.com. Ever think you were getting a great seat in a plane only to discover you should've asked for the non-exit row seat in the bulkhead because it had more legroom and the seat reclined further back? I wish I'd known about this site when I was doing my traveling some time ago. These days most of my flying is done aboard one of the Wal-Mart corporate jets that take us from San Jose to Arkansas weekly. The lack of security checks and free parking is key but the lack of real 'facilities' make the bladder poker a game everyone becomes an unwitting participant of. More stories about this on another day.
I couldn't resist. Have you seen the little Apple logo? It's glows in the dark for pete's sake! How could I not buy it?
"There are threats to the Netflix business, however. The specter of a larger video chain like Blockbuster Inc. or a mass retailer like Wal-Mart Stores Inc."
Netflix subscriber turnover spooks investors.
Please also file under 'b', this time for blue. As in, this guy is blue. No, I don't mean he's sad, I mean he's actually freaking blue. Apparently, he thought that around the time of the millenium, antibiotics were gonna be really hard to come by so he started ingesting colloidal silver. Now his skin is blue and it ain't goin back. Yikes.
File under 'b' for bad judgement. Man plans to marry woman who ripped off one of his testicles.
Have you you thought to yourself, "Hey, I wonder what Devo would sound like arranged for a wind ensemble"? Me too! And so did my co-worker John Gluck. He has a group called the Punk Rock Orchestra and they perform a whole bunch of punk tunes that they've arranged for non-traditional lineups. They had a performance recently and thanks to my minidisc recorder (and some sound card noodling on John's part) the results are saved for posterity.
